Overview

The "Employee Birthday (Junior Employee)" XBert identifies employees under the age of 21 who have an upcoming birthday within the next four weeks. In many industries, junior employees are entitled to a pay increase when they reach certain ages, as outlined in relevant awards or agreements.

What it does

This XBert helps ensure compliance with Fair Work pay requirements for junior employees by:

  • Scanning for active employees aged 21 or under

  • Monitoring for birthdays occurring within the next 28 days

  • Triggering an alert so you can confirm and update pay rates if required

How it works

Junior pay rates typically increase each year until the employee turns 21. This XBert checks birth dates recorded in the payroll system and flags any employees whose birthdays are approaching. It serves as a reminder to review their pay structure, especially if they are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement that mandates age-based pay increments.

Example/Use Case

Jack works at Club Café under the Hospitality Industry General Award. He is 16 and paid at the prescribed junior rate for his age. As his 17th birthday approaches, this XBert notifies the payroll team to update his pay rate effective from his birthday.

On the other hand, Susan is also employed at Club Café but is on a salaried agreement that does not adjust rates based on age. In her case, the XBert can be safely filed as no update is required.

Processes

To resolve:

  • Review the employee’s birthday and pay rate

  • Check relevant awards or agreements to confirm if an age-based rate increase applies

  • Update the employee’s pay structure in your accounting system if required

Note: The alert will auto-resolve one week after the employee's birthday if no action is needed.

Monitoring birthdays of junior employees helps ensure fair compensation and keeps your payroll processes compliant with Fair Work regulations.
